Codex for Students: $100 Credits & Eligibility

Eligible students at degree-granting US or Canadian universities who reside in either country can claim $100 in ChatGPT credits for Codex. Verification is required, each student can claim once, and credits expire after 12 months. These are not API credits.

Choose your access path

$100 student credit grant

One grant of ChatGPT credits for Codex after successful verification. You must attend a degree-granting US or Canadian university and reside in either country when claiming. Credits expire 12 months after grant.

Choose this if: you meet both the enrollment and residence requirements and have not already claimed the student offer.

Limited Free desktop access

The official pricing page lists a $0 route for quick coding tasks in the desktop app, subject to rollout. It does not establish access to every Codex surface.

Choose this if: you want to try a small coding task before considering a paid plan.

An existing personal ChatGPT plan

Plan level controls supported models, surfaces and usage. Plus lists web, CLI and IDE access, while cheaper and higher plans have different scope.

Choose this if: you already subscribe and want to check what coding access that account includes.

University Edu workspace

Institutional access depends on workspace availability and administrator controls. Confirm the feature and relevant models are enabled for your account.

Choose this if: your university provides an eligible workspace and approves its use for the assignment.

API-key authentication

Developer usage is charged at API rates rather than taken from an assumed student subscription allowance.

Choose this if: you need a deliberate developer billing route for scripts or automation.

Who qualifies for the $100 Codex student offer?

OpenAI's dedicated student page sets two location conditions: enrollment at a degree-granting university in the United States or Canada, and residence in one of those countries when claiming. A university email alone does not establish eligibility. The application must successfully verify your student status, and each student can receive the offer only once.

Start from the official student page and follow its Claim now link. Use the ChatGPT account where you want the credits applied and your university email for verification. We checked the public terms; we have not redeemed the offer or tested an individual application.

How the grant works and when it expires

After verification, the $100 credit grant is added to your ChatGPT account for use in Codex. It expires 12 months after the grant date. This is a one-time allowance, not $100 every month, a cash payment or an unlimited coding subscription.

Record the expiry date and check the credit balance before a large project. The official FAQ explicitly says these are not API credits. Keep developer API keys and their billing separate; the student grant does not fund an API organization.

Start with the plan you already have

The student FAQ accepts ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts. Qualifying students can start with Free; buying Plus is not a prerequisite to claim. The grant can extend Codex usage beyond your plan's included limits, but check which desktop, web, CLI and IDE features your account supports.

For a university account, ask campus IT about workspace settings as well as the subscription name. Edu access and model availability can require administrator enablement. Test access before a lab session instead of discovering a restriction during an assessed exercise.

Is Codex free for students without a paid subscription?

The reviewed page lists a $0 Free option for quick coding tasks in the desktop app, subject to rollout. This is a general account route, not evidence of a separate student grant. Use the features actually visible in your account and check whether your region and workspace are supported.

If you are outside the student grant's eligibility, check the access already available in your account. The $100 Codex offer and any ChatGPT Plus student promotion have separate terms. Neither should be treated as unlimited coding access or developer API funding.

Why there is no reliable messages-per-homework promise

OpenAI says usage varies with the model, task complexity, context and tools. A short function edit and a large repository investigation can consume different amounts. Local and cloud work share allowances, and weekly or other limits may apply.

Keep requests focused: provide the relevant file, describe the intended behavior and ask for a small reviewable change. Check the usage dashboard for your own limits and reset times. Do not turn a published estimate into a fixed number of assignments you can complete.

Keep API billing separate from ChatGPT sign-in

The official pricing page explicitly separates API token prices from included subscription usage. If a tool uses an API key, confirm which developer organization owns that key and its billing. Paying for ChatGPT does not settle an API invoice automatically.

For a course repository, use a branch or a recoverable working copy, inspect proposed edits and run the project's checks. Ask for explanations of unfamiliar code, and follow your course's rules for AI-assisted work. Generating a passing-looking answer is not the same as understanding why it works.

How to get started

  1. Check that you attend a degree-granting university in the US or Canada and reside in either country when claiming.
  2. Open the official Codex for Students page, choose Claim now and complete verification using your ChatGPT account and university email.
  3. After approval, open the usage page and confirm the 2,500 credits that OpenAI identifies as equivalent to $100. Record the 12-month expiry date; each student can claim once.
  4. If you do not qualify, compare the limited Free rollout and your existing plan; ask campus IT about any Edu workspace access.
  5. Choose ChatGPT sign-in or API-key authentication deliberately; verify which account pays before starting a task.
  6. Try a small change in a sample repository, inspect the diff, run its checks and watch your usage dashboard.

Our recommendation

Check the student grant first if you meet the US or Canadian enrollment and residence requirements. Record its expiry and start with a small, reviewable coding task. Otherwise, compare your existing plan and campus access before buying an upgrade; choose API billing deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Is Codex free for students?

Eligible students enrolled at degree-granting US or Canadian universities and residing in either country can claim $100 in ChatGPT credits for Codex after verification. Each student can claim once. Separate limited Free-plan desktop access is subject to rollout.

Does a student email unlock more Codex usage?

An email alone is insufficient. The student offer requires successful verification, current enrollment at a degree-granting US or Canadian university, and residence in the US or Canada when claiming.

Do the $100 student credits renew each month?

No. The offer is a one-time grant per verified eligible student. Credits expire 12 months after the grant date.

Can I use the student grant for API calls?

No. OpenAI identifies these as ChatGPT credits for use in Codex, not API credits. Developer API billing remains separate.

Can I use Codex through ChatGPT Edu?

The pricing documentation includes Edu, but actual access depends on workspace availability and administrator controls. Ask your university whether Codex and the relevant models are enabled.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus to claim the student credits?

No. The official student FAQ accepts ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts. You still need to meet the university, residence and verification requirements; the credits extend Codex usage rather than paying for developer API calls.

How many coding tasks can I complete for free?

No fixed student task count is established. Model choice, context, tools and task complexity affect usage. Check your own usage dashboard and current reset times.
