Cursor Student Discount: Current Offers & Free Access
Cursor's current student page offers ordinary Free access and points to campus or online event promotions. It does not advertise a universal free year of Pro. New applicants should start with Free or follow a specific official event offer.
Choose your access path
Standard Free — $0/month
Limited Agent and Chat requests under the current Free plan. The student page says anyone can get started for free.
Choose this if: you want to try an AI-assisted editor without relying on a student-specific promotion.
Campus or online event promotion
Follow the offer for your campus or online event. Its eligibility, activation steps and duration must come from that event's terms.
Choose this if: you have a current official event offer and can inspect its terms before activation.
Try the free request allowance on a small assignment
The pricing page lists Free at $0 per month with limited Agent and Chat requests. Start with one small task, such as understanding a function or changing a test, then check the allowance shown in the app before planning a full project around it.
Read generated edits and run your project's checks. Paid access may change how much assistance you can request, but it does not establish that the resulting code is correct or acceptable under your course's AI policy.
Read event terms before adding payment details
The student page does not give a common expiry, card requirement or renewal price for event promotions. Read the actual offer for your event and confirm which account receives it. Do not assume a past promotion's requirements apply to the new one.
For ordinary paid subscriptions, the pricing FAQ accepts major credit and debit cards and says to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid additional charges. Keep a record of the amount and date shown in your billing account if you upgrade.
Choose an editor around the project, then compare eligibility
Cursor provides desktop downloads for macOS, Windows and Linux, including ARM64 and x64 options. Check your operating system and project tooling before changing editors in the middle of an assignment.
If a verified student benefit is the deciding factor, compare the separate eligibility guides for Kiro, Zed and GitHub Copilot. Their rules do not transfer to Cursor. Keep the editor that works with your course repository unless a specific feature or usage limit justifies switching.
How to get started
- Open the current official student page and distinguish general Free access from any specific campus or online event promotion.
- Download the desktop app for your supported operating system and sign in to the account you intend to use.
- Check your current plan and allowance before accepting a trial, paid upgrade or event offer.
- For an event promotion, read its own eligibility, duration, payment and renewal terms; a student email alone is not proof that an offer is applied.
- For a paid subscription, inspect the next renewal date. The pricing FAQ says to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid another charge.
Our recommendation
Keep using Free while it covers your assignments. Consider a paid upgrade when its limits repeatedly interrupt your work and the ongoing price fits your budget. If a defined education allowance matters more, compare Kiro, Zed and GitHub Copilot before switching editors.
