Kiro Student Plan: Credits, Eligibility & Verification
The Kiro student program provides 1,000 credits per month for one year to verified students at eligible universities. No credit card is required. School participation matters: having a university email alone is not enough.
Choose your access path
Kiro Students
1,000 monthly credits for a year after school and enrollment verification.
Choose this if: your university appears on the current list and you want AI assistance for a coding project.
Standard Free after the program
Kiro says the account automatically downgrades to Free when the year ends, while local work and repositories remain yours to access.
Choose this if: you want to continue without choosing a paid upgrade after the student period.
Kiro student eligibility starts with your school
The official page maintains an eligible-university list. Check that list before connecting accounts or making the program part of a semester budget; it can change, and this guide does not promise access for an unlisted institution.
Kiro requires a university-affiliated email on the account regardless of whether you use Google, GitHub or AWS Builder ID. Existing users can link the appropriate email and visit the usage page to check for the eligibility banner.
How the 1,000 monthly credits work
The student allowance resets each monthly cycle for one year. Unused credits do not carry into the next month, and add-on credits are not available on the Students tier. Reaching the allowance means waiting for the next cycle or considering a different plan.
A credit is a usage unit, not a guarantee of one completed feature or a fixed number of lines of code. For a class project, start with a small task, inspect the result and check usage before delegating a large change.
When Kiro fits a student coding project
Kiro's official student page emphasizes specifications, code changes and work from the editor or terminal. A useful learning exercise is to describe one small feature, review the proposed requirements, then test the resulting change against your own acceptance criteria.
Keep your project in a repository and make sure you can explain the code. The allowance is useful for iteration, but it does not replace debugging skills or your course's rules on AI-generated submissions.
What happens after the student year?
Kiro says the account automatically returns to the Free tier. Code, specifications and projects on your machine or in repositories are not lost when the student allowance ends.
A paid tier is optional. Decide based on the allowance you actually used rather than assuming you need to upgrade to preserve your work.
How to get started
- Check whether your university is on Kiro's current eligible-school list.
- Sign in through Google, GitHub or AWS Builder ID using an account associated with your university email. The organization sign-in route is not supported for this program.
- Open the account usage page, find the student eligibility banner and complete SheerID verification.
- Confirm the Students tier and its allowance before beginning a project; note the monthly reset and one-year end date.
Our recommendation
Use the Kiro student plan if your school qualifies and you want to practice a specification-led coding workflow. Track your first project's credit use before relying on it for a larger assignment. If your school is not listed, compare Zed or GitHub's student tools instead of treating verification as guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions
Does Kiro require a student email?
Yes. The account must be associated with your university email even when you sign in using Google, GitHub or AWS Builder ID. Your university must also be eligible.
Do unused Kiro student credits roll over?
No. The official program provides 1,000 credits each monthly cycle without rollover. Student add-on credits are not available.
Can existing Kiro users claim student access?
Yes. Kiro directs existing users to link their university-affiliated email, open the account usage page and complete the student verification flow if eligible.
Will Kiro charge me automatically after one year?
The student page says the account automatically downgrades to Free after one year. A paid upgrade is optional, and no credit card is required for student access.
What if my school is not on Kiro's list?
Do not assume access is available. The student page has a way to express interest in an unlisted school, but that is not an approval or a promised launch date.
