Choose your access path
Student Pro year
12 months of Pro with the specified student AI allowance and exclusions.
Choose this if: you qualify and want an editor for collaborative coursework and code assistance.
Free after the offer
Zed says the Student plan automatically downgrades to Free after 12 months.
Choose this if: you want to continue using the editor without choosing a paid Pro upgrade.
Zed student discount eligibility and the GitHub requirement
Zed's education page requires enrollment at an accredited university and an age of at least 18. Verification starts with a GitHub account older than 30 days and a valid, current university email.
A newly created GitHub account is therefore not enough for immediate verification. Prepare the correct account before you apply; a university email alone does not remove the other eligibility requirements.
Unlimited predictions do not mean unlimited AI
The official program lists unlimited edit predictions and $10 per month in token credits for AI assistance. These are distinct benefits: the unlimited wording does not apply to all AI usage.
The Student plan specifically excludes Claude Fable, Claude Opus and GPT Pro models on the checked page. If your course or project depends on a particular model, check availability before planning around the free year.
A practical fit for group coding
Zed describes real-time collaboration, shared terminals and voice chat in the editor. For a group assignment, agree who owns each change, test a small shared session and keep the code in your repository.
Use AI assistance to explain or review a specific change, then run your own checks. The student offer is attractive when you want both an editor and collaboration; it is less useful if you only want access to an excluded AI model.
What happens when the free Pro year ends?
The official FAQ says the plan automatically downgrades to Free after 12 months. You can choose to upgrade to Pro; the student page does not promise a second free year.
Check your remaining allowance before a deadline and review the current paid terms only if the Free plan no longer covers a recurring workflow.
How to get started
- Check that you are at least 18 and currently enrolled at an accredited university.
- Open the official Zed Education application using a GitHub account older than 30 days.
- Provide your valid, current university email and complete the requested verification.
- Confirm the Student plan in your account, then check the AI token allowance and supported models.
- Record the end of the 12-month period and review whether the Free plan meets your needs afterward.
Our recommendation
Apply if you meet the university, age and account requirements and want to use Zed for real coursework. Evaluate its collaboration and editing workflow during the free year. Do not choose it solely for an AI model that the Student plan excludes; Kiro or your existing editor may fit better.
