Start with GitHub student verification

The custom-domain options in this guide come from the official GitHub Student Developer Pack listing. Apply for student access first, then open each partner offer through your approved account. A university email alone does not demonstrate that every partner benefit has been granted.

GitHub's student application documentation describes age, enrollment and account requirements, including a minimum age of 13 and a school-issued email or other evidence of current student status. Follow the actual evidence request and check the partner's own account and geographic rules before selecting a name.

Free registration and free hosting solve different problems

A registered domain gives you a name you can point at a service. It does not automatically provide an application server, database or paid email mailbox. GitHub Pages offers hosting for a static site; other projects may need a different deployment service with its own limits.

For a short assignment, an account.github.io or project address may be enough. You can add an eligible custom domain later. Keeping the site portable makes it easier to change the host without abandoning a name you have put on a résumé.

Check the second year before choosing the first

Namecheap's .me and the standard .TECH offer each specify one included year. The checked Name.com Pack description names eligible extension examples but does not specify its registration period. Avoid treating all three offers as identical one-year promotions.

Record the normal renewal price, expiry date and auto-renew setting before redeeming. A zero first payment does not establish a zero second-year cost. Optional email, privacy, certificates or hosting can also have separate charges; inspect the final order rather than relying on the headline offer.

Choose a name you can keep after graduation

For a personal portfolio, choose a spelling you can explain aloud and an extension you can afford to retain. For a temporary class project, a free hosting subdomain can be more practical than a registration you will forget to renew.

Keep access to the registrar account and a recovery address you control beyond graduation. Review transfer rules before moving a domain, and remember that changing a registered name generally means registering another name. Save a copy of the site and DNS configuration so the student offer is not the only copy of your work.

How to claim and connect a student domain

  1. Apply for GitHub Education student access and complete the requested enrollment checks.
  2. Open the current Pack offer from the approved account and check available names with the partner.
  3. Confirm the registration period, renewal price, payment requirements and optional extras before submitting an order.
  4. Connect the domain to a compatible host, then test the site and HTTPS using the host's instructions.
  5. Save the expiry date, renewal settings, registrar login and a backup of your site.

Before you choose

Start with a GitHub Student Developer Pack eligibility check. If the project needs an application workspace, compare Replit's access and deployment limits separately. Register a custom name only when its extension, term and renewal fit the project.

Frequently asked questions

Can students get a domain name for free?

The GitHub Student Developer Pack currently lists eligible domain benefits from Namecheap, Name.com and .TECH. Verification and partner redemption rules apply; availability of a particular name is not guaranteed.

Which student domains include one free year?

The checked Pack listing specifies one year for Namecheap .me registration and one standard .TECH domain. Its Name.com description does not specify a term, so confirm it during redemption.

Can I get any .com domain through these offers?

The reviewed listing does not establish a general free .com entitlement. Use the eligible extension and name choices actually shown by each partner.

Is a github.io address a free domain registration?

It is a hosting subdomain tied to a GitHub account or project. It can publish a portfolio without registering a separate domain, but it is different from an owned name at a registrar.

Are student domain renewals free?

The checked offers do not establish free lifetime renewal. Check the normal renewal price and your account's auto-renew settings before accepting a registration.
