Who qualifies for the ChatGPT student discount?
OpenAI's help article includes current full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. SheerID determines whether the school and enrollment qualify.
Your ChatGPT email can differ from the email used with SheerID. The promotion goes to the ChatGPT account signed in during the claim flow, so check that account before verifying. Earlier participation in another student promotion does not by itself disqualify you.
Existing Plus accounts and mobile subscriptions
New users and existing monthly Plus subscribers billed directly by ChatGPT can qualify. A subscription billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play cannot receive the offer while it remains store-billed.
Use the web offer flow and check where your existing subscription is billed. Do not create a second paid subscription merely to test eligibility; ask support about your account if the billing route is unclear.
Renewal and early cancellation: the cost to check
You will not be charged for the four free monthly billing periods. After that, Plus renews at $20 per month unless you cancel. This is a time-limited promotion, not a permanent free student plan.
If you cancel early, Plus continues until the end of the current monthly billing period, then any remaining promotional months are forfeited. Set a reminder to review renewal; canceling immediately does not preserve all four free months.
When SheerID succeeds but the offer is missing
Return to the official offer link while signed in to the same ChatGPT account and select Claim free offer. OpenAI says this either leads to checkout if it is unfinished or shows the account receiving the promotion.
For school listings, document review or enrollment verification failures, use SheerID support linked in the official help article. Successful student verification alone is not the same as completing promotion activation.
How to get started
- Open the official Back to School offer page in a web or mobile web browser by October 31, 2026.
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you want the offer applied. The promotion cannot later be moved to another account.
