Google Cloud for Students: Learning & Cloud Credits

Eligible students can apply for 200 Google Skills learning credits. Faculty can request up to $50 per student for Cloud usage. The separate $300, 90-day new-customer trial requires payment verification.

Choose your access path

Google Skills — 200 learning credits

For eligible students at supported colleges and universities. These credits unlock learning activities; they cannot pay your own Cloud project's bill.

Choose this if: you want guided labs or skill badges and do not need a persistent app deployment.

Teaching grant — up to $50 per student

Faculty apply for approved courses. Eligible enrolled students receive redemption instructions for actual Cloud usage credit.

Choose this if: your instructor has arranged a supported course that needs Google Cloud resources.

General Free Trial — $300 for 90 days

For eligible new customers, with a valid payment method. Student status neither establishes eligibility nor extends the trial.

Choose this if: you need your own project and can manage trial limits, billing and resource cleanup.

200 learning credits cannot cover a hosting bill

Google's student page advertises 200 Google Skills credits. The program terms explicitly separate training from Cloud credit: training recipients are not receiving cloud credit through that offer. A lab allowance therefore does not fund an always-on database or a website in your personal project.

The application requires current enrollment and an institutional email. The eligibility page limits the program to supported countries and regionally accredited colleges or universities, and excludes for-profit institutions. Check the live list before planning around approval.

Ask your instructor about teaching credits

The teaching route is different: eligible faculty apply for up to $50 in Cloud credits per student. You must be enrolled in an eligible course, then follow the school's email verification and coupon instructions. This is not a personal grant that every student can claim independently.

Google's coupon FAQ says credit-card information is not required to redeem teaching credits. If you see a card prompt, check that you have not entered the separate Free Trial flow. Teaching credits are intended for educational skill-building, not commercial or unrelated personal projects.

Use the expiry on your issued grant

The training application says learning credits expire one year after issue, subject to any earlier date in the offer. Teaching-credit sources are less consistent: the application describes use through one year after course start, while billing documentation describes one year after redemption.

Use the date on your issued coupon and billing console rather than choosing the longer interpretation. Redemption and usage deadlines are also different. Save a copy of important coursework before expiry; Google warns that exhausted teaching credits stop access and running VMs, with storage removed after a 30-day period.

When the $300 trial can become paid usage

The general trial supplies $300 for 90 days to eligible new customers. It requires payment verification and is unavailable if you have already used the trial or been a paying Google Cloud, Google Maps Platform or Firebase user. Verification may create a temporary authorization hold.

Google says the trial does not charge you unless you manually upgrade to a paid account. After upgrading, usage outside remaining credit and product-specific Free Tier limits can be charged. Free Tier allowances are monthly, limited by product and sometimes region; they are not unlimited hosting.

The trial does not cover Gemini API costs in AI Studio or managed third-party generative AI models. A non-upgraded trial account also cannot add GPUs to VMs. Check these exclusions before choosing a machine-learning assignment for the trial.

How to get started

  1. Start on the official student page and decide whether you need training labs or resources for a deployed project.
  2. For learning, follow the Google Skills credit application, check the current country and institution criteria, and verify your institutional email.
  3. For a course deployment, ask your instructor whether an approved teaching-credit grant is available; redeem the issued coupon using its instructions.
  4. If considering the general Free Trial instead, check new-customer eligibility, payment verification and the 90-day limit before signing up.
  5. Record the issued expiry date and billing-account type. Export important work and stop or delete unnecessary resources before the allowance ends.

Our recommendation

Use Google Skills for guided practice, and ask your instructor about teaching credits when the course needs real cloud resources. Choose the general trial only when you need an independent project and understand its billing path. If the assignment permits another provider, compare Azure for Students and AWS Educate before attaching a personal payment method.

Frequently asked questions

Do Google Skills student credits give me $200 for hosting?

No. The 200 credits are for learning activities. Google's program terms explicitly say that this training offer does not provide Cloud spending credit.

Can students apply directly for the $50 teaching grant?

Faculty apply for the teaching-credit program. Eligible students enrolled in the approved course follow the issued verification and coupon-redemption instructions.

Do Google Cloud student programs require a credit card?

Teaching-credit redemption does not require card details according to the coupon FAQ. The general Free Trial requires a valid payment method. Do not treat these as the same application.

Does the $300 trial automatically start charging me?

Google says you will not be charged unless you manually upgrade to a paid account. Once upgraded, uncovered usage can be billed. Without upgrading, trial exhaustion or expiry stops resources, with deletion after the grace period.

Which teaching-credit expiry date should I use?

Use the expiry shown in your issued grant and billing console. Public sources describe different starting points for the one-year period, so do not assume the longest possible deadline.
