Canva for Students: Free, Education & Campus Access
Canva has a personal Free route, while Canva Education is free for eligible K–12 teachers and their students. K–12 students join by teacher invitation. University students should check campus access rather than assume their email grants free Pro.
Choose your access path
Personal Canva Free
A starting point for presentations and visual work without claiming an education entitlement.
Choose this if: you need a personal design account and can work with its available free assets and features.
K–12 Canva Education
Free for eligible primary and secondary educators and their students. Students join through a teacher invitation.
Choose this if: your schoolteacher has a verified Education classroom.
University campus access
An institutional route promoted separately by Canva; your school's arrangement determines your access.
Choose this if: you are a university student and campus IT confirms a supported account or invitation.
Canva for students is not one universal Pro offer
The official Education FAQ commits free access to K–12 educators, their students and qualified school institutions. It directs primary and secondary students to join through their teacher's Canva Education account.
A university student should not use that K–12 statement as evidence of personal Pro eligibility. Canva presents campus access separately. Ask your institution what it provides before taking out a personal subscription.
How K–12 students join Canva Education
Your teacher needs to invite you from a verified Education account. Follow the class invitation with the account your school expects you to use, then confirm that you are working inside the correct class or team.
If an invitation is missing or you cannot see the class, ask the teacher to check the intended email and team. Do not sign up as a teacher to bypass student invitation requirements.
What university students should ask campus IT
Start with three practical questions: does the institution provide Canva access, which account should you use, and what happens to the account and designs when you leave? The public Education page links a campus route, but does not establish a personal entitlement for every university student.
If your university has no arrangement, use personal Free for a first presentation or poster and assess the actual limitations before considering a paid plan.
Avoid paid-asset surprises before export
A template can be easy to edit while still containing an element that your selected plan does not cover. Check the plan and licensing prompts for images, graphics and other assets before you build a full assignment around them.
Try an early export of a small sample. That checks whether the output format and assets meet your submission requirements while there is still time to replace an element or choose another tool.
How to get started
- Decide whether you need personal Free, a K–12 Education classroom or a university-managed account.
- For personal use, open Canva and check that the selected plan is Free before accepting any trial or subscription.
- For K–12 Education, ask your teacher to invite you from their verified Education account.
- For university access, ask your campus IT or teaching team whether it provides Canva and follow its invitation or sign-in instructions.
- Before submitting a design, check its assets, export settings and any upgrade prompts.
Our recommendation
Start with personal Free for a quick visual assignment. Join a teacher's Education class if you are an eligible K–12 student, or check campus IT if you are at university. Consider paying only when a specific feature or asset repeatedly blocks your work; for interface prototypes, compare Figma first.

Frequently asked questions
Is Canva Pro free for all university students?
Do not assume so. Canva's free Education commitment applies to eligible K–12 educators and students. University access is a separate institutional route, so check what your campus provides.
How does a school student get Canva Education?
Canva's FAQ says primary and secondary students join through an invitation from a teacher's Canva Education account.
Does a .edu email automatically unlock Canva Pro?
The checked Education page does not establish that entitlement. Your access depends on the program and account you join, not just the email suffix.
Can I use Canva if my school has no Education account?
Use the personal Free route and check the features and assets available to that account. Do not assume that paid content is included just because the design is for coursework.
Should I choose Canva or Figma for a class project?
Start with Canva for presentations and posters. Figma is a better starting point for interface design and clickable prototypes. Check the relevant free or education plan before committing your group to either tool.
